Building the Panama Canal was a crowning achievement for the United States. This dangerous project cost the lives of 38,000 workers. Once completed in 1914, the Panama Canal allowed for faster, safer, and cheaper shipping between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. But Jimmy Carter sold the canal to Panama in 1977 for one dollar, in exchange for Panama’s permanent neutrality. Panama took complete control of the canal in 1999.
